Abstract of doctoral thesis – Daniel Bita

Recently, various laser types have been proposed used as the elementary non-linear blocks for building time-delay coupled networks due to their similar dynamic features, such as excitability, synchronization and chaos together with their inherent advantages of high response rate and reduced size. Thus coupled semiconductor laser networks provided an excellent test-bed for studying time-delay coupled systems and a promising field for the realization of exciting applications like photonic neural network motifs for information processing. In this research, coupled semiconductor mode locked lasers will be used for the development of networks as means to achieve synchronization through self-organization. The research will provide a mapping of the laser network topologies and the conditions under which synchronization occurs. The analysis will be carried out through experimental investigation and theoretical simulations. Furthermore, applications of the synchronization characteristics in various fields like communication technologies, optical sensing, will be examined.
