Abstract of doctoral thesis - Georgios Sarigiannis

"The implementation of the Internet of Things (loT) and Cyber Physical systems (CPS) in flooding early warning systems and effective disaster management"

The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to study the implementation of the Internet of Things and the use of Cyber Physical systems in flooding early warning systems in order to achieve effective disaster management. An environmental and geospatial analysis will be applied with the use of a geographical information system (GIS) in order to study and achieve the optimal placement of sensors on the ground, so to monitor and take measurements that will later on indicate when the level of the water running down towards a populated area is rising dangerously, or if there is a strong risk for a storm to occur, by measuring, temperature, moisture, and other weather parameters. If there is a critical combination of these parameters, an early warning system can alert the local population or aid the population to safety. Moreover by implementing a cyber-physical system as an early warning system we can start transitioning into a smart controlled environment.
